Privacy Policy

1. Overview

SmokeClock ("we", "our", or "the app") is an iOS and Android application that helps users gradually reduce and quit smoking. SmokeClock is developed by Josep Salvat, an independent developer based in Spain, who is the data controller for the processing described here. You can reach us at hello@smokeclock.com.

This policy explains what data the app collects, which service providers receive it, why, and what rights you have.

Short version: there is no account. Your plan, logs and history are stored on your phone. To run and improve the app we use a small number of service providers: Mixpanel (product analytics), AppsFlyer (install attribution and campaign measurement), RevenueCat (subscriptions) and, on iPhone, ConfigCat (feature flags and experiments). They receive pseudonymous identifiers, never your name. Some analytics events include your plan settings and daily cigarette counts. We never sell your data. iPhone app versions up to 2.39 also sent some app events to Meta; this was removed in version 2.40, and the Android app never included it. On iPhone from version 2.40, and in every Android version, you can switch off usage analytics in Settings.

2. Data stored on your device

SmokeClock does not have user accounts. The following data is stored on your phone (on iPhone with Apple's SwiftData framework, on Android in a local database inside the app):

  • Your smoking plan (daily cigarette count, pace, target quit date)
  • Your schedule preferences (wake time, bed time)
  • Pack price and quantity (used to calculate your savings)
  • The cigarettes you log and your progress history

The optional home screen widget reads a copy of the data it needs from storage on your device (on iPhone, Apple's App Group mechanism; on Android, the app's private storage). This storage stays on your device. If you delete the app, this data is deleted with it. Section 4 describes the limited data that is sent to service providers.

3. Notifications

If you grant permission, SmokeClock sends local notifications to remind you of your scheduled cigarettes. These notifications are created on your device and do not involve any server.

4. Service providers that receive data

Mixpanel (product analytics)

We use Mixpanel to understand how the app is used so we can improve it, fix problems and check whether the method actually helps people smoke less. Mixpanel receives:

  • App events linked to a pseudonymous identifier (a random ID created by the app, not your name, Apple ID or Google account), for example onboarding steps, screens opened, cigarettes logged or skipped, and paywall views, purchases and cancellations
  • Your plan settings and daily counts, for example how many cigarettes your plan allowed and how many you logged each day, and when you change your plan
  • Technical information: app version, device model, iOS or Android version and language/region setting
  • Your approximate country, derived from your IP address

Because some of these events describe your smoking, we treat them as health-related data and declare them as such on the App Store and on Google Play. See Mixpanel's Privacy Policy.

AppsFlyer (install attribution and campaign measurement)

We use AppsFlyer to find out which of our campaigns (for example on Apple Ads or TikTok) led to an install or a purchase, so we know where to spend our small marketing budget. AppsFlyer receives:

  • Install, app open and purchase events
  • The identifier for vendors (IDFV, an ID that is unique to our apps on your device) and device information such as model, iOS version, language and IP address
  • On iPhone: attribution data from Apple's privacy-preserving frameworks (SKAdNetwork and AdServices)
  • On Android: the Google Play install referrer (which tells us which store link or campaign led to the install), device information such as model, Android version, language and IP address, attribution data from Android's Attribution Reporting API where available, and your device's advertising ID (Google advertising ID) if your settings allow it

SmokeClock does not ask for App Tracking Transparency permission and does not access your device's advertising identifier (IDFA). From app version 2.40, the ad networks that run our campaigns only receive aggregated campaign results from AppsFlyer, with no device-level data. In earlier versions, AppsFlyer could pass install and purchase events of individual devices to those ad networks so they could measure our campaigns. On Android, AppsFlyer may pass install and purchase events of your device, with its advertising ID, to the ad networks that run our campaigns (for example TikTok) so they can measure them. You can reset or delete your advertising ID at any time in your Android settings (Privacy → Ads). See AppsFlyer's Services Privacy Policy.

RevenueCat (subscriptions)

We use RevenueCat to manage subscriptions and unlock premium features. RevenueCat receives your purchase and subscription status (product, price, renewals, trials, cancellations), pseudonymous identifiers (a RevenueCat app user ID and your Mixpanel ID), the Apple Ads attribution token when available (iPhone only), and your country and currency. ConfigCat (feature flags and experiments, iPhone only)

We use ConfigCat to switch features on or off and to run experiments, for example comparing two paywall layouts or an offer with and without a free trial. ConfigCat receives a pseudonymous identifier so that each device consistently gets the same version of the app. The Android app does not use ConfigCat. See ConfigCat's Privacy Policy.

None of these providers receive your name, email address or precise location. They process the data on our behalf and under our instructions. We never sell your data.

5. Purchases

In-app purchases and subscriptions are processed by Apple on iPhone and by Google Play on Android. We never see or store your card or payment details. Please refer to Apple's Privacy Policy and Google's Privacy Policy for how they handle purchase data.

6. Feedback form

If you send feedback from the app, we receive your message, your email address if you choose to add it, whether you are a premium user, your app version, your iOS or Android version and device model, and your language/region setting. It is sent directly to our support inbox, which is hosted on Discord. We use feedback only to answer you and to improve the app.

7. Advertising and Meta

iPhone app versions up to and including 2.39 contained Meta's SDK, which sent app events (install, app open and purchase) to Meta for advertising measurement. We removed it in version 2.40. If you are still on version 2.39 or earlier, updating the app stops this. The Android app has never contained Meta's SDK. Apart from the campaign measurement described for AppsFlyer above, no SDK in SmokeClock tracks you across other companies' apps or websites, and we do not use your data to show you targeted ads.

8. Your choices in the app

On iPhone from version 2.40, and in every Android version, Settings has a switch to stop sharing usage analytics. When it is off, the app stops sending events to Mixpanel and AppsFlyer. RevenueCat keeps working because it is needed for subscriptions, and on iPhone so does ConfigCat, so the app loads the right features. You can also delete everything stored on your device by deleting the app, and you can ask us to delete data held by our providers (see section 12).

9. Legal basis (GDPR)

If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, we rely on these legal bases:

  • Performance of a contract: providing the app and the subscription you bought (RevenueCat, Apple, Google Play) and delivering the right app configuration (ConfigCat)
  • Legitimate interests: understanding and improving the app (Mixpanel), measuring our campaigns (AppsFlyer), running experiments (ConfigCat) and preventing abuse. You can object at any time, including with the switch in Settings
  • Consent: when you choose to send us feedback or add your email address
  • Legal obligations: keeping records we must keep by law, such as for tax purposes

10. Retention

Data on your device stays until you delete it or the app. Pseudonymous analytics and attribution data are kept only as long as we need them to understand and improve the app and measure our campaigns, and are then deleted or expire under each provider's retention settings. Subscription records are kept while they are needed to give you access and to meet accounting and tax obligations. Feedback is kept as long as needed to answer and follow up, and we delete it on request.

11. International transfers

Some of our providers (including Mixpanel, AppsFlyer, RevenueCat, Netlify and Discord) process data in the United States or other countries outside the European Economic Area. When data is transferred, we rely on the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses or another lawful transfer mechanism, such as the EU-US Data Privacy Framework where the provider is certified.

12. Your rights

You have the right to access your data, correct it, delete it, restrict or object to its processing, receive a copy of it and withdraw consent at any time. To exercise these rights, email hello@smokeclock.com. Because SmokeClock has no accounts, we may ask for details that help us find your pseudonymous data. You also have the right to complain to a data protection authority, such as the Spanish Agencia Española de Protección de Datos (AEPD) or the authority in your country.

13. Children's privacy

SmokeClock is meant for adult smokers and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from children. If you believe a child has sent us data, contact us and we will delete it.

14. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time, for example when the app changes. Any changes will be shown on this page with an updated date. We encourage you to review this page periodically.
